In February, 1916, 7th Middlesex left 8th Division to become part of 167 Brigade, 56th (London Territorial) Division and then, after a period of training, moved south to the Somme. On 16th May, 1916, 7th Middlesex were relieved from the trenches at Hebuterne and moved back to billets at Bayencourt. But this did not mean that they were out of danger. They had to provide working parties for the front line and on 18th May, 1916, one of these working parties sustained eight casualties of which seven men were wounded and Archibald Hodson was killed.
